A soft 17 contains an ace counted as 11, such as ace–6. The dealer can draw another card without immediately risking a bust because the ace can fall back to 1.
Why the rule matters
Under H17, the dealer gets another chance to improve a relatively weak 17. The extra draw can sometimes make the dealer bust, but overall it increases the casino’s advantage compared with an otherwise identical S17 game.
Visible changes in this chart
The H17 profile taught here includes a few decisions learners commonly miss:
- Double hard 11 against a dealer ace after the dealer has peeked and does not have blackjack.
- Double soft 18 against dealer 2 through 6; stand if doubling is unavailable. Under S17, you would normally double only against 3 through 6.
- Double soft 19 against dealer 6; otherwise stand.
Those decisions assume the complete rule set stated on the strategy chart. Changing the hole-card procedure, surrender, or other rules can alter the answer.

Read the felt or table placard before choosing a chart. “Dealer must draw to 16 and stand on all 17s” signals S17. “Dealer must hit soft 17” signals H17.
